Rotary shaft seals for Mining.
Mining service combines large shafts, heavy slurries, and remote installations where seal replacement means a chartered helicopter or a 20-hour drive. The economics favor over-engineering: spend more upfront on tungsten faces and 316L bar-stock construction, save the field trip.
01The challenge
Why sealing this service is hard.
These are the failure modes our application engineers have catalogued from twenty-five years of mining installations. Most are visible only after a seal has been pulled.
- 01
Heavy-density slurry abrasion
Flotation cells, thickener rakes, and SAG-mill discharge handle slurries at 1.6 to 2.2 SG. Tungsten / tungsten faces are a strict requirement; anything softer fails in months.
- 02
Hydrometallurgy chemistry
Sulfuric leaching, cyanide gold recovery, and pressure oxidation autoclaves all involve aggressive chemistry at temperatures above 150 °F. Hastelloy C-276 wetted parts and FFKM secondaries are standard.
- 03
Remote-site service intervals
When the closest service crew is 12 hours away, three-year service life isn't a luxury — it's a P&L line item. Our 9700 ships with a documented MTBF of 24,000+ hours on heavy-slurry service.
- 04
Large-shaft thickener rakes
Thickener rakes and clarifier drives commonly use 6- to 12-inch shafts. The Split Seal in custom diameters up to 14 inches is the practical answer for these.
